Get Help for Intimacy Disorder
Stigmas around mental health concerns are lifting. However, many men are still hesitant to talk about intimacy disorders. Intimacy disorders can make it impossible to maintain romantic relationships and healthy friendships, resulting in shame and despair. Intimacy disorder treatment can help you build shame resilience and develop closer bonds.
At Begin Again Institute, you can heal from intimacy disorder and learn to make true connections with others.
Understanding Intimacy Disorders
Intimacy is the ability to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with someone else. This type of deep connection builds over time as you get to know and trust another person.
The first experience of intimacy typically comes during childhood. When parents and other family members protect and nurture a child, the child learns how to trust and form bonds of intimacy.
Intimate relationships are generally divided into four categories:
- Intellectual. Bonding over ideas or meaningful discussions
- Experiential. Sharing common interests and experiences that bring you close
- Sexual. Having a physical or sensual relationship
- Emotional. Bonding by sharing feelings, dreams, and fears
The goal for most committed life partners is to build intimacy in all four categories. Intimacy disorder treatment can help you achieve that goal.
Intimacy disorders can manifest in many different ways. They can lead to sexual dysfunction, including sexual addiction. An intimacy disorder may also cause a person to go in the other direction. They may isolate and avoid close relationships.
Signs you may benefit from intimacy disorder treatment include:
- Fear of commitment
- Difficulty expressing needs
- Low self-esteem
- Sexual obsessions or insatiable sexual desire
- Pornography addiction or sex addiction
- Self-isolating
- Avoiding physical contact
- Episodes of unexplained anger
- History of unstable or unsatisfying relationships
- Fear of rejection or abandonment
People with intimacy disorder may resign themselves to a life without loving relationships, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Intimacy disorder treatment has many benefits and is available and effective.
Treatment Approaches for Intimacy Disorders
Approaches for intimacy disorder treatment vary depending on the person’s symptoms. At Begin Again Institute, we combine some of the most effective, evidence-based treatments to help clients heal. Those therapies include:
Internal Family Systems
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is one of the most effective types of intimacy disorder treatment. IFS helps clients understand themselves better. The IFS approach can shed light on how the different parts of yourself, including the wounded parts, react with one another. IFS focuses on healing to restore mental balance.
IFS is a form of talk therapy. You will work one-on-one with a trained therapist to identify the sub-personalities that live within you. The therapist may recommend certain activities or tools to aid this process. Relaxation exercises and journaling are common.
Brainspotting
The Brainspotting treatment method locates points in the reactive brain to help fix unhealed trauma that results in addiction. Begin Again Institute clients undergo up to four brainspotting sessions during an intensive intimacy disorder treatment program.
Inner Child Therapy
Holding onto shame or unrealistic expectations from childhood can complicate intimacy disorders. Inner child work may include a combination of therapies meant to aid clients in healing childhood wounds.
Individualized Treatment Plans
Personalized intimacy disorder treatment plans are crucial for true healing. Intimacy disorders are not cookie-cutter issues. Each person comes to treatment with their own unique background, obstacles, and experiences. Some people may need to heal from sexual trauma, while others benefit from learning how to be emotionally vulnerable.
